I never imagined I’d turn into the adventurous traveler I am today. Over the past few years, my comfort zone has flipped completely, and I owe it all to wandering off the familiar path.

Growing up in Vancouver, I was lucky to escape the cold winters with family trips to sunny destinations. Hawaii and Mexico were our staples. After finishing university, I caught the Europe travel bug, and before long, my apartment was overflowing with Paris-inspired décor. I had not one but two Eiffel Tower–shaped soap dispensers, even a cheese grater in the form of the Tower. Every birthday seemed to bring more of the same, until my place looked like a miniature Paris museum. (Since traveling to Peru, those Eiffel Towers have mostly been swapped out for llamas—but that’s on me).

I adored my seaside escapes and Parisian cafés, but I never felt drawn toward the rugged, off-grid kind of travel. Unlike most of my friends in their early twenties, I didn’t have the urge to explore the backpacker circuit in Southeast Asia. The infamous full moon parties, buckets of booze, the typical photos—I felt no need to add my version to the stereotype. And the thought of crammed hostel dorms, endless night buses, and the occasional cockroach? Absolutely not. But another piña colada on the beach? Yes, please, señor.

My journey beyond the safety of my comfort zone truly began when my close friend and university roommate qualified for the 2016 Olympics. Naturally, my friends and I knew we had to be there to support her — which meant our destination was Brazil. Rio de Janeiro, here I come!

With the news filled with stories about the Zika virus and armed robberies (just ask Ryan Lochte), Rio felt a little intimidating for someone like me, who wasn’t exactly an adventurous traveler. While I was thrilled to cheer on Team Canada, the idea of visiting Rio itself didn’t excite me as much.

The city was simply stunning. Towering mountains rose from the lush scenery, while colorful favelas clung to their slopes. The sweeping curves of Copacabana and Ipanema sparkled under the waves, alive with energy and activity. Murals and street art framed the patterned sidewalks, and it was impossible not to move with a samba rhythm as you walked along. The açaí was refreshing, the caipirinhas packed a punch — I was hooked. Zika? What Zika?

We bunked in a couple of questionable hostels, nearly missed a 5 a.m. bus, and stumbled through plenty of language barriers. But that’s all part of the messy, unfiltered beauty of real travel. This wasn’t the typical vacation — it was something completely new to me, and I loved every second.

After Rio, it felt like the whole world was calling out, arms wide open like Christ the Redeemer himself. No adventure felt too big, and I was ready to say yes to it all.

For my next adventure, I raised the stakes and set out on a six-month solo journey across the globe. I called it “Peace Play Passion” — inspired, perhaps, by a pre-trip viewing of Eat Pray Love. My “Peace” chapter unfolded in Rwanda, “Play” took shape in Southeast Asia and Australia, and “Passion” came alive in Paris. If Rio first awakened my love for travel, Peace Play Passion completely captured my spirit. Since then, exploring the world has become one of the greatest motivators in my life.

Leaving behind my family, career, and the apartment I adored for half a year wasn’t simple. I had built a life of ease and comfort — and I enjoyed it. Yet, if travel has taught me one lesson above all, it’s that true living often begins beyond comfort.

I’ve wandered solo across six continents. I’ve trekked alongside mountain gorillas, battled through nights in hostels filled with earth-shaking snores, stumbled through leech-ridden rainforests in darkness, dived among manta rays, woken to a cockroach on my cheek, and camped my way through East Africa. Along the road, I’ve forged friendships and memories I’d never have found by staying in my bubble — and paradoxically, the distance has deepened my connections with loved ones back home.

Travel looks different for everyone. Some feel at home on a luxury cruise, others in a quiet cabin close to home, and some thrive while trekking off the beaten path. Whatever your style, breaking from routine offers perspective, joy, and growth.

Daring to move beyond what’s familiar introduces new sights, fresh perspectives, and adventures that can expand your world and free your spirit. You can’t know where your limits lie until you step past them — and you just might discover the experience of a lifetime along the way.

I never truly believed in the universe until I started fully embracing travel. Now, I make it a point to get the most out of every experience, whether it’s amazing or challenging, and I swear the universe seems to reflect that energy right back at me.

Nowadays, before every trip, I set an intention — maybe I’m seeking peace, excitement, adventure, or connection — and let the universe handle the rest. By staying open to whatever comes my way, I’ve met incredible people and had experiences that have shaped me in the most meaningful ways.
When I travel, I lean into being a yes-person — of course, always respecting basic safety. If someone tries to lead me somewhere unsafe, I’ll say no, no question.

But within my comfort zone, or just beyond it, my motto is to say yes and discover what unfolds. Try scuba diving, zip-lining, or making new friends from around the world. Saying yes to adventure opens doors you never imagined. If I had declined that daunting trip to Rio de Janeiro, I might still be sipping a watered-down mojito at an all-inclusive resort in Mexico.

Instead, I’m gearing up to climb volcanoes, dance salsa, and chase new experiences across Central America. ¡Adiós, amigos!

One of my favorite travel companions is my life partner, Lele, even though we seem quite different – at least on the surface.I am a dreamer at heart. In fact, during the pandemic, I found ways to explore the world without leaving home. Lele, on the other hand, is practical and grounded, focusing on a trip only once it’s already planned.

Having grown up in a city, I find solace in nature. It helps me feel centered and in harmony with the world. Lele, an agronomist raised in the mountains, can identify every plant and animal and knows their treatments and species. Being in nature, he feels that deep, primal connection, as if he’s the hero of an untamed adventure.

I tend to be introverted, while he is extroverted. Our personalities are different, yet we are more similar than we initially believed. Over the years, and through our travels together, we discovered that we share the same passion for the world, each expressing it in our own way, which has kept us together for twelve years.

Our diversity has taught us to approach situations from different angles, handle challenges in unique ways, experience life more fully, embrace new activities, and explore the world with fresh perspectives. In short, it’s helped us understand each other more deeply.
